Honeycomb or cellular shades, are named for the empty pockets of air that run parallel to their seams. In general, cellular shades resemble traditional pleated shades when viewed from the room. Unlike pleated shades, however, cellular shades are composed of at least two sheets of fabric; one facing the room and the other facing the outdoors. Both of these fabrics come in a variety of opacities and colors, giving you flexibility over the color used to accent your room and that used to accent your exterior décor.

The layers of fabric are joined together at the seams so that, when the shade is pulled down, pockets of air are created to help insulate the room. These “cells” protect your room against heat loss in the winter and heat absorption in the summer. They also provide barrier against both outside and inside noise.

Variations in Cellular Shades

Not all cellular shades are created equal, however. Not only do they come in a variety of colors and light filtering options, cellular shades also vary in cell sizes, numbers, and insulating qualities. Cell sizes and cell numbers can affect energy efficient properties of the shade as well as the depth of the shade itself. Energy efficiency is not just affected by cells, though. Fabric weaves and thicknesses also play a large role in the insulating properties of your cellular shades and the overall look and feel of your window treatments. There is also a wide variety of control options available ranging from continuous cord loops to cordless and remote-controlled.
